Round 2 Report (The field narrows!)

The fierce field of contenders fought hard and only two remain. Here’s how they got there and the results of round 2 and 3.

Texaport vs. Brifox: Zephyr Division

The first game of round 2! Texaport and Brifox have been around the robot block and are familiar with each others’ strategies in previous tournaments. This time around, Texaport’s team was unknown due to his first opponent bowing out of the first round. Brifox gambled on what Texaport’s plan may be. Texaport’s team consisted of the AROZ-100 and AROZ-400, a few other robots, and the masked fighter, Mika the Red. Mika has a cool ability called “Mirror Match” which allows him to use the AROZ-6000 for shenanigans, making it’s laser lose HEAVY and AIMED. Texaport combined into the AROZ-6000 allowing him to easily take out Brifox’s ESPER-600. With that sacrifice Brifox skirted around Texaport’s GAN-100 and energy burned the rest of the team, squeaking out a win. Sideboards came into play game 2, with Brifox switching out the weakened ESPER-600 for a damage dealing ELL-100 and Texaport subbing out an INADE-100 for ELL-100. This round metal would fly with the damage increase on both teams!  Texaport combined into the ELL-2000 and went on the offensive! Brifox made use of Kal’s Commander ability, Wallflower protecting his team while dealing damage. The fight went back and forth, eventually with Brifox claiming victory!

EpicImpulse vs. Droyer: Dawn Division

Two evenly matched players face off! In Game 1 Epic gets his robots into position and Droyer counter plays every move made. Things aren’t looking great for Epic, but he holds on and luck’s on his side. Droyer got a few bad dice rolls weakening his strategic counter play as Epic mounted a comeback featuring a battle between Epic’s ARM-777, GHILI-200, and ENDER-5000 against Droyer’s ARK-2500, INADE-400, and SNO-400. After a tense showdown, Epic clenched the victory! In Game 2, Droyer kept up the pressure and his counter plays would steamroll Epic’s attempt at an IPPL-100 infiltration. Droyer’s ARK destroyed the IPPL and Epic’s battle went downhill from there. In Game 3, Epic bounced back by quickly dispatching Droyer’s ENDER due to his own perfectly accurate ENDER. Droyer combined into the ARK-3000, used it’s Flicker ability to Disarm two of Epic’s robots. Epic counter played, destroying the ARK-3000 and taking the game from there. Combining was a huge factor in this game, featuring cool combine tricks in Game 2. Ultimately Droyer’s over extension of his combines in Game 3, clenched Epic’s victory!

Cybermage vs. Ensign: Boulder Division

Game 1 opened with Ensign advancing his robots into Cyber’s formation and combining not once, but twice to take advantage of Detonator to deal damage. Cyber took advantage of these close quarters and used the GEL-400 radial missile. It missed Ensign’s AKTEL-100 and IPPL-100, allowing Ensign to follow up with an IPPL energy drain attack on Cyber’s GEL. This decidedly wrapped Game 1. Ensign side boarded in the Esper-600 for Game 2, adding a second Beacon robot to the team. Cybermage countered this by combining into AROZ-SOL on turn 1, prompting Ensign to combine early to hide the fragile ESPER. Cyber played defensively, taking potshots at the GAN-100 while Ensign moved the cloaked AKTEL and IPPL forward. Once they were close enough, Cyber double detonated on the IPPL. Ensign retreated the AKTEL and combined again. Cyber took his time safely dealing damage with the AROZ-SOL. Ensign went all in and combined into SSM-8000 to crush Cyber’s robots! The game turned into keep away between the AROZ-SOL and SSM. This worked in Cyber’s favor, resulting in a Game 3. Ensign tagged the ELL-100 back in and the SSM-100 out for a SALV-400. Ensign combined into the SALV-1000 and cautiously advanced. Cyber skillfully used terrain to get shots on the SALV. Ensign’s IPPL got double detonated, so he combined into the SALV-5000. Cyber used the AROZ-400 to accuracy buff the ELL-4000 and narrowly avoided wiping Ensign’s team. Ensign used the SALV and destroyed the ELL, but the ELL’s Parting Cannon destroyed him in turn. With few options remaining, Ensign conceded and Cyber claimed victory.

Morjor vs. Gojirazard: Teapot Division

The last match of Round 2, Morjor vs. Gojirazard! Morjor went first but Goji immediately combined into AROZ-ELL-SOL. Morjor spread out his team, to avoid the AROZ-ELL-SOL laser. Goji took aim and destroyed the ENDER-100 with Kal equipped on it. Morjor took this opportunity to charge his team in. Goji had to spend a turn charging up for the next attack, so Morjor combined into the ARK-3000 and used it’s Flicker ability to prevent the AROZ-ELL-SOL from attacking for a turn. While it couldn’t move, the ABB-100 encroached on the AROZ-ELL-SOL. With Morjor’s robot close, Goji used the Ellfire Arrester to lock down the team. Goji waited a turn to save energy to blast Morjor’s team into scrap with the Infinite Justice laser! In Game 2, Goji sideboarded the ELL-400 and ION-100 for the ENDER-100 and IDA-400. Morjor kept the same team. This time, both teams advanced toward each other. Once in range, attacks flew between teams. Morjor’s Kal that was equipped on the ENDER fell, in retaliation, Morjor almost destroyed Goji’s ENDER, but it was saved by combining into the ENDER-2000. Morjor advanced his team, Goji combined into the AROZ-SOL to counter. Morjor combined his IDA and GEL into the GEL-2000 to counter this counter! Attacks went back and forth, robots were weakened on both sides. Goji decided if the opposing ABB and AXIS were destroyed, the GEL-2000 couldn’t continue fighting. He went for the all out attack, destroying the ABB and AXIS! This move made Goji the winner!

Brifox vs. EpicImpulse: Semi-Finals

This match will determine if Brifox continues his run of AEGIS world champion or will there be an EPIC upset? Game 1 was Laser vs. Laser. Brifox went first, and setting up his SEN. Epic wasn’t used to infinite range on turn 1 and positioned one of robots in the SEN’s line of sight. Brifox takes the shot…and hits, scoring early damage! Epic used his SNO-400 to heal the robot. This back and forth happened for a few turns until Epic formed a new strategy called…the PAIN TRAIN. The SNO-400, AROZ-400 and ENDER-100 lined up, then SNO used it’s accuracy laser to buff the AROZ and ENDER, followed by the AROZ accuracy buffing the ENDER. The ENDER had perfect accuracy against every robot except for Brifox’s ESPER-600. Epic took out some key robots on Brifox’s team and this let Epic take the first game. Game 2 Brifox took a more of a defensive approach, using Beacon on the ESPER-600 and its excellent evasion to disrupt Epic’s plans. Brifox carefully calculated distances to ensure he was never in attack range until the correct moment. The right moment was when Brifox’s IZZI-100 sprung into action, disarming key robots on Epic’s team when they got too close. The IZZI kept Epic’s GHILI-100 and ARM-777 disarmed so the rest of Brifox’s team didn’t take damage. That mixed with energy burn meant Brifox took Game 2. One match left for him to keep his title.
Game 3 combined everything from the first 2 rounds. Brifox carefully positioned his bots, making sure to stay out of range until he was ready, Epic slowly inching his PAIN TRAIN closer and closer. If Brifox can position the ESPER in the way, the PAIN TRAIN will derail, but the GHILI presented the biggest challenge ignoring the ESPER evasion buff. Epic’s GHILI was in range of Brifox’s ARK and ESPER. Brifox advanced the ARK and ESPER, spends the energy, and misses the soaring ARK blade. The ESPER tries to shield the ARK, but it’s no use. The PAIN TRAIN delivers and Epic takes out both Brifox’s ARK and SEN. Brifox makes a tactical retreat and positions his robots in a close knit circle. Shots are fired, but Brifox doesn’t land hits on the PAIN TRAIN. And so, Epic moves his robots in. And in true AEGIS fashion, makes a super combining robot. Detonator 2 wipes out all of Brifox’s robots in one swift motion. The end of a legacy. The Epic Upset.

Cybermage vs. Gojirazard: Semi-Finals

The turn one level 5 mirror match! Cybermage went for the AROZ-ELL-SOL turn 1. Goji decided to hold back, instead rushing the AROZ, ELL, GEL, and ION towards the opponent, but keeping them separated. Cyber took out the ELL and ION as they advanced. Goji got the GEL-400 and AROZ-400 in range, but they missed the big robot! Cyber destroyed the AROZ, but Goji had a plan, combine into the ELL-GEL-ION Awakening! Cyber had to pass the turn to build up energy. Goji took this chance to move the ELL-GEL-ION in, attack, and drain the AROZ-ELL-SOL. Cyber fired again, but the robot still stood! Goji got another energy burn attack in, and Cybermage conceded game 1 due to energy burn. Game 2 Goji went first. Cyber side boarded the ION-400 for ARLY-300, and utilized it’s combat drop. This time, Goji combined into AROZ-ELL-SOL on turn 1. Cyber advanced his team and spread out. Goji damaged Cyber’s ELL, so Cyber combine the GEL and ELL into ELL-2000 and the ARLY offensively Combat Dropped close to the AROZ-ELL-SOL. The little AROZ harassed the big AROZ. Goji dumped a bunch of dice on a shot to scrap the ELL-2000, but it still stood. Cyber combined the AROZ into the ELL-5000. Goji eventually landed a massive attack on the ELL-5000, but Cyber’s ARLY and SOL weakened the AROZ-ELL-SOL to 2 integrity. The weakened AROZ-ELL-SOL Restrained the smaller robots out of attack range. This game turned into cat and mouse with careful positioning and waiting for the right time to strike. Goji carefully moved the AROZ-ELL-SOL in position to finish the smaller robots, but the smaller robots got it down to 1 integrity. AROZ-ELL-SOL strategically retreated and killed the SOL. Cyber’s ARLY gave chase. Finally, the AROZ-ELL-SOL fired a massive laser, destroying the ARLY. Goji wins!
