2022: New Games, More Robots
Breeze Grigas | Posted on | No Comments |
Hey wonderful people, this is Breeze, director of Zephyr Workshop. Happy new year!
Gather ’round and let’s talk about what magical board game content Zephyr Workshop was up to in 2021! And what we’re bringing you in 2022! (It’s more AEGIS!) We’ve been doing too much stuff this year to write blog posts, so it’s been a bit quiet. These days we’re mostly active over on Twitter and in our Discord.
Undoubtedly, you’re here for this…
But first, let’s look into other elements of 2021!
New Developments
Throughout the pandemic and outside of AEGIS, Zephyr has been doing more and more board game work for outside publishers as developers. Devs are people who take games already in the publishing pipeline and make them better. Finally hitting just now is Batman: The Animated Series Adventures. On that project, we worked under Brieger Creative and tested dozens of scenarios while I reworked the rulebook and helped clean up card language.
We also helped build Tabletop Simulator mods for games like Longshot: The Dice Game and other upcoming titles. These opportunities have helped us expand and polish our design and production skills a lot, and that’s definitely carried over into Zephyr’s own projects.
In 2022, I hope you’ll get to see more of our contributions, it’s all secret for now though! (Except Jurassic Park Legacy which we were lucky enough to slam out some last-minute testing on. Game’s great!)
New Games
So have we published a new board game since AEGIS? Not yet! But! That doesn’t mean there aren’t new AEGIS games!! In fact, 2021 saw new AEGIS stuff come to shelves, twice!! Earlier in the year Millennium Blades: Collusion shipped, which features a deck of AEGIS crossover cards with its own combining mechanic. We had a little bit of design input here, but overall it was just Level 99 Games doing what they do best. Then, right at the end of the year at PAX Unplugged, the masses were introduced to Pocket Paragons: AEGIS. This is an entire, stand-alone game by our friends at Solis Game Studio. Looking to hang out with our AEGIS characters again? Face off in some sick 5-minute duels. Designed by Brian “Games” McKay, it’s really, really good and available now!
And then, hitting Kickstarter this year is Strange Machine Games’s ICONOCLASH, a Smash Bros-like platform fighter, but on a table! Our own Diane will face off against Solis’s Mr. F in their own stand-alone expansion.
New (Zephyr Workshop) Games
So what have we been making? Well, probably too much, but that’s exciting too! This year saw a lot of progress on several internal board game projects. If you’re not keeping count:
- AEGIS Wildmoves: Designed by Nicholas Trahan and our first externally signed title, this is our twist on a Pocket Paragons-style dueling game. This one’s almost done, expect its release alongside AEGIS2! Play it now on TTS!
- Florafiora: Our mythical co-op adventure game that’s been in development *checks notes* forever leapt up a couple notches this year. It has a whole new version going into 2022, re-scoped and beautiful as ever.
- UPROOT: Arboreal Battleship: Our 2-7 player space opera area control game also made some solid progress in 2021. We got it playable online in TabletopSim and we look forward to pushing it further in 2022.
- Outrange: Wild AEGIS: Two “Wilds”? Gotta change this name. This co-op action JRPG set in the world of AEGIS also took a big leap forward and into TabletopSim! We learned a lot from the suite of co-op enemy-punching games we worked last year that will carry through to this. Stay tuned.
- And of course, we have several other prototypes in the pipeline, but the above are our main focus this year.
But those aren’t why you’re here. Why you clicked is…
AEGIS: Second Ignition
A huge bulk of Zephyr Workshop’s efforts this year went towards our biggest, shiniest board game project yet: AEGIS Season 2. Through ’21 we aggressively tested and spruced it up. Now also known officially as AEGIS: Second Ignition, it’s an entirely new, stand-alone game that’s also fully combinable with the first box.
Your favorite robot game returns with an entirely new box of robots and heroes vying for control of Sigaea in all-out robot fighting tournament! This all-new box features:
- Dozens of new robots, streamlined for easier learning and more tactical depth!
- A roster of new Commanders, featuring new luck-defying mechanics!
- Many exciting new combat and combining abilities!
- New game mode! Starpoint Arena! Play with respawning robots and rack up points!
- Three boards! Play classic AEGIS, or get to punching faster on the Duel Boards!
- Solo mode! Fight against AEGIS-Class boss robots!
This year saw dozens upon dozens of robot and character illustrations completed, tons of testing, and even a couple live events. The result is that AEGIS2 is actually in a much more finalized state than AEGIS1 when it headed to Kickstarter, meaning that once we’re funded, we’ll have minimal work to do before shipping the game. No 18 month wait this time!! (famous last words, considering the absolute state of global shipping right now).
The Kickstarter video and page are in a great spot and we’re looking to launch in March!!
