Round 2 Report (Getting down to the wire)

Don’t forget to check out Jesse’s analytics for the entire tournament! There you’ll find all the information you need on each player’s team, how they performed, which robots were used the most, and anything else you could want. Ok, there’s no tab for watching Gundam while you browse, so…almost everything you could want.

Texaport vs. Reginald

Round 2 kicked off with us streaming Texaport, using Mika the Red, who took on Reginald, using Vatis. While Reginald won the match 2-0, both rounds were close fights. Reginald only had two damage-dealing robots, so if Texaport had taken them down, Reginald would have been up a creek without a paddle. Reginald kept Vatis snug in a corner of the board, keeping him back and out of danger. The combination of Vatis’ Shifty Business and Detonate ended up winning Reginald the fight, utilizing the ELL-2000’s positioning to blow up Michael’s robots multiple times.

MarioFanaticXV vs. Gojirazard

In this battle of the quarterfinals, MarioFanaticXV entered the fray with Stell and Gojirazard came in with Nolan the Recusant! A battle of ranged attacks vs. combine tactics. MarioFanaticXV spent round 1 waiting for Gojirazard to rush in before taking them down. Round 2 saw Gojirazard learning from MarioFanaticXV’s tactics and winning that game, making the third round a nail-biter. After smart and effective plays on both sides, and Gojirazard’s gigantic SSM-8000 missing several critical attacks, round 3 was eventually decisively won by MarioFanaticXV, making him the victor.

JJ vs. BriFox

Round 1 of JJ and BriFox’s fight was close, with JJ’s standard Ainer team taking on BriFox’s Kal team. JJ won round 1 by splitting up and attacking BriFox from around the board before combining into larger bots. The second round saw BriFox coming into his own, being more careful of JJ’s flanking attacks and quickly taking out JJ’s combine options. In the last round, BriFox carefully took apart JJ’s team, earning him the win.

SleepyPaladin vs. RobotScott

SleepyPaladin made a strong showing with his push-centric Vatis team, playing strategically against RobotScott and his Nolan-headed combiner team. RobotScott used the robots at his disposal as well as he could in each of the rounds, but SleepyPaladin was a force of nature. The game ended with SleepyPaladin declared the winner!

And the SemiFinals!

Reginald vs. MarioFanaticXV

Reginald and Vatis came back to fight MarioFanaticXV and Stell! Mario had given this round tons of thought, and he came up with some creative tactics. The first round started with MarioFanaticXV arranging his robots in a clump to stop Vatis’ Shifty Business from moving his artillery around. Mario proceeded to pepper Reggie’s robots with rockets, and patiently waited for Reggie to approach, prepared to take out his ELL bomber. However, Reginald’s GAN absorbed enough of Mario’s long-range damage that his team managed to grind out the game and win the round. Round 2 saw MarioFanaticXV making a comeback with the same defensive strategy, this time overwhelming Reginald, who combined his robots early in search of a swifter victory. In round 3 Reginald started off so strongly that MarioFanaticXV conceded, allowing Reginald to win the match and proceed to the finals.

BriFox vs. SleepyPaladin

BriFox started the game a little shakily. Round 1 saw him underestimating the range and accuracy of SleepyPaladin’s SSM-3000, and with a powerful and lucky roll, SleepyPaladin blew away Brifox’s whole team with a volley of rockets, quickly ending round 1. In round 2 BriFox experienced some Canadian Internet difficulties but managed to adapt to SleepyPaladin’s strategy, narrowly winning the round. Round 3 saw BriFox send Kal to the front lines alone, destroying Paladin’s main pushing robot, while keeping the other robots behind cover. It became a close game thanks to SleepyPaladin’s powerful combine attacks, but BriFox’s Jamming-assisted robots and Energy Draining maneuvers were ultimately too much for the Paladin’s remaining low-accuracy attacks.

The FINAL BATTLE!

BriFox vs. Reginald

Before the game even began, Kettle started the stream playing the AEGIS Kickstarter video to hype everyone up. To mess with Reginald, BriFox loaded Reggie’s energy tracker as Kal’s rather than Vatis, which made for a great opening where Reginald said he was playing as the best commander, and then freaked out that he couldn’t change the tracker because it was locked.
In Round 1 Reginald wouldn’t let BriFox’s SEN get a clear shot and turtled the first couple turns, getting defense buffs on his GAN. After BriFox took out some of Reginald’s robots, lower and lower energy production meant Reginald’s combine options started to dwindle away. Soon after exhausting his combine options, Reginald conceded the match. Round 2 saw BriFox getting intimidated by a turn 1 AROZ 6000 from Reginald. BriFox responded by making the SEN5000, better-known as Laserbird! Reginald’s AROZ ended up taking out BriFox’s Laserbird, leading BriFox to use his other robots to charge ahead and attack Reginald. It came down to a very close game with each player on the edge of death. BriFox just barely managed to take the second round, winning both the game and the tournament.
Congratulations to BriFox! Thank you to everyone who participated. It was a fantastic showing!
And start preparing for the next tournament NOW! We’ll have the next one kick off in early Summer!
